Each day my goal is to give my children a happy, fun, safe environment to grow and develop into what they want to be. I try not to control or hold them back. I am there still however to direct and guide them safely. So when that point in every toddlers life comes when they start climbing your kitchen bench, your cupboards, the shower glass… you know it’s time to gently guide this urge to still climb but climb on safer places.
This is where a good old fashion trip out to the park is nearly a daily occurrence for us.
Just like they fall down, scrap a knee, to learn to walk, the same goes with climbing. They have to learn that they need to hold on or they will fall. Give them the space and opportunity to try to experience this feeling. It’s only then once they ‘get it’ that they will hold on.
Let them play, let them be free, let them learn. Give them a go to explore new playground equipment regularly and watch their gross motor skills improve and their strength increase. O and most importantly a good run around and play always tires them out for a good night sleep. Which I see is also a benefit for anyone on the parenting journey.
